Nikon today unveiled the new Coolpix P900, a superzoom compact camera with a crazy 83x of optical zoom, allowing photographers to “take creativity to extreme distances.”

The zoom is enabled by the pinocchio-style Nikkor ED glass lens on the front of the camera that ranges from a 24mm-equivalent lens when zoomed all the way out to a crazy 2000mm-equivalent lens when zoomed all the way in. The camera can also do 166x zoom with a digital Dynamic Fine Zoom feature.

Inside the camera is a 16-megapixel CMOS sensor that can capture 7 frames per second in continuous shooting mode. The shutter lag time is just 0.12 seconds at wide angle and 0.75 seconds at its maximum telephoto focal length — useful for things like photographing your kid in action at their local sports event.

A Dual Detect Optical VR technology offers the equivalent of 5 stops of stabilization to help reduce blur caused by camera shake, something that could ruin your shots when zoomed in at the equivalent of 2000mm.

The Nikon Coolpix P900 will be available starting in April 2015 for the price of $600.
