This Beautiful Stripped Down Leica M3 is Totally Worthy of the Term “Gear Porn”

m3_1

It’s not often we get to use the words stripped and porn in one of our titled, but this gorgeous stripped down Leica M3 offered up one of those rare exceptions.

In a world were the term “gear porn” is used to describe pretty much any desirable piece of equipment, this camera takes it to another level by shedding its outerwear (if you will) and giving us a peek at the something that is at once incredibly intricate and beautifully simple.

Described as a “rare original factory cutaway (around serial number 800000)” of the much-beloved 35mm M3 rangefinder, it comes to us from the Leica Shop Vienna’s eBay store, and it will set you back 12,000 EUR (or about $16,000 USD) if you want to display it on your shelf:

I’d like to be alone with these photos for a moment. Hope my wife doesn’t walk in…

The joy of being a photographer. My D800E doesn’t get all jealous if I go out for the evening with my D90, or slap me for drooling over images of a Leica M3.

  • Ralph Hightower

A Leica camera for $15,000 that no longer works?
As P.T. Barnum once said “There’s a sucker born every minute.”

  • Mark N

Yup, I’ll buy a working one for a couple grand and cut it up myself. Ooooorrrr, maybe I won’t cut it up…

  • Poison Shroom!

Considering people buy Leica just because it’s the best with no idea how to use a camera, I can see someone with money to burn buying this.

  • MikeinGyeonggi

People drop that much (and more) on jewelry and artwork, which serve no practical purpose. It’s just aesthetic appeal. Since this M3 is one-of-a-kind, I’d say it falls into the art/collectible category. Who knows… someone may even make money on this investment later on.

It’s the Leica D-Lux owners who are suckers, as they paid several hundred dollars more to have a red dot on their Panasonic camera.

Just wrap it in electrical tape, duct tape, gaffer’s. Then, paint with some crazy color of nail polish and some idiot hipster will pay $20,000 for it. “Lomo-M3-Dumb*ss Edition”

  • docholliday666

Even worse, get the G-Star Raw edition so you can pay for a more hideous paintjob, then get an overpriced, ugly leather case to cover it all up and make it “worth more”.
