This Horrifying Fake Camera Cleaning Tutorial Will Probably Give You Nightmares

The video above is not for the faint of heart. Heck, even the not-so-faint of heart will probably have trouble with it. A FAKE (not sure how much more we could emphasize this) tutorial, it shows you ‘how to clean your 5D Mark II and lens’ … and by clean we mean destroy.

He starts by submerging the camera and lens completely in water, and then, in case your eyes haven’t popped completely out of your head and you haven’t gone hoarse yelling at the computer screen just yet, he pours some dish soap in there and proceeds to vigorously scrub the inside of the camera with his finger.

Finally, he then takes a spray hose, sticks the nozzle right up next to the sensor, and sprays it full blast.

It’s like watching a photographic car wreck. You know it’s happening, you know it’s terrible, and you’re horrified… but you just can’t look away.

And while it goes without saying, we’re going to say this here in case anybody who actually thought the iOS 7 update made your iPhone waterproof is reading this: THIS IS A FAKE TUTORIAL. From start to finish, doing anything resembling this to your camera will very likely destroy it.

Now go give your DSLR a hug.

  • Renato Murakami

Please don’t promote this crap, please.

  • Lynda Bowyer

    Even as a Nikonian, I winced… :-O

  • Gvido Mūrnieks

Looking at rating of the video – I see, that a lot of people has no sense of humor.

  • Raphael Moser

The bubble sound when submerging them… :/

  • Dan Tauro

Will this work with all Cameras? Now where is my hose? :)

  • Greg Heller

He forgot to use the toilet brush – it’s made to get into those cracks and crevices. And finally put them into your clothes dryer on hot for an hour or so and make sure they get nice and dry.

  • 4dmaze

How you dry it is very important also. I am surprised that he didn’t use an air compressor or can of compressed air to blow all of that water out. If you hit that flappy mirror thing just right with the air it will flip back and forth really fast…

  • Mike Olbinski

Would have been better if he had actually flipped up the mirror to clean the sensor :)

  • John

This guy has great humor!! Love it!!! *soak it good* :D

  • ReinoldFZ .

Thanks, as a landscape photographer this video was a blessing, I used a toothbrush in the sensor after the bath and it wiped out the nasty AA filter from the sensor. Now my landscapes are crystal clear. LOL

  • HidetoS

While you’re at it, you should also blow that water into the CF card slot and battery holder.

  • Chang

So wasteful. I don’t understand the attraction of these destruction-based entertainments. It doesn’t matter what you shoot, a lot of resources and time went into that camera, and I’ll bet a lot of the people laughing are the same ones who protest tar sands exploration, or fracking. The decisions you make ripple throughout the world.

  • Mike

Do you not know the meaning of fake?

  • Chang

I do know it. But that certainly appears to be a real camera and real lens, really being destroyed.

  • TSY87

its possible, and likely, that the camera was already destroyed or broken. Get over it.

  • Andrew Iverson

I have a sense of humor, but i don’t find this funny at all. I’m not offended by it, it’s just stupid. It all comes down to “Hur hur! I do something stupid! Look at me!”. :P I kept waiting for something funny to happen, it never arrived. I have seen videos like this, almost exactly, before too, so there isn’t even the shock of someone doing this anymore.

  • Chang

Perhaps it was broken. But the attitude behind this is the same reason we have a huge pile of plastic in the middle of the Pacific Ocean choking out marine life there, and landfills filled to bursting all over the world. So no, I will not “get over it” because I care.

  • Greg Heller

Wouldn’t want to contaminate the sensor with dust particles

  • Jason Kustra

Does it matter which brand of soap you use?

  • Jason Kustra

I know he didn’t mention it in the video but you should probably take out your battery prior to soaking. You don’t want it to short out on you.

  • Casey Colomb

    :,(

  • Island In The Sky

So wrong to laugh during this video…but laugh I did. Hard. Whoever made this has a truly dark sense of humor, heh heh heh.

  • Jason Yuen

Agree with you Chang. If it served a purpose then maybe it’s acceptable, for example cell phone drop tests to test durability. However those youtube channels shooting electronics with guns is just wasteful and serves no purpose.

  • Lenn Long

Make sure and stick it in the oven at 325 degrees for 15-20 mins to get it nice and dried out too….

  • http://reciprocity-failure.blogspot.com/ Stan B.

“I’ll bet a lot of the people laughing are the same ones who protest tar sands exploration, or fracking.”

Wow, you sure do know your demographics- I’m sure you have sound statistical data to make such an absolutely absurd statement!

But Wait… There’s More! Tar sands exploration (and removal) and fracking are two of the most environmentally destructive practices on the planet today. In fact, removing, refining and transporting oil from tar sands expends more energy than it actually creates! And of course, fracking has already poisoned several water tables, caused low level (thus far) earthquakes and raised methane levels.

Chang, I’m in complete amazement about how much subject matter you know less than nothing about. That’s not an accident, that takes commitment, don’t know about hard work- but definitely commitment…

  • mike winslow

can I charge it while doing this? Here’s a good suggestion: use the microwave oven to dry it off quickly

  • Leonardo Abreu

    “Looks good” lmfao

  • chrisldiaz

I don’t know guys, I mean the camera DID look clean when he was finished…but watching the air bubbles coming from the camera every time he dunked was like watching the poor thing take its last gasping breaths.

  • Michael Novoseletsky

My Nikon is waterproof, so unfortunately soaking it would do nothing as the water could never make it’s way in :(

  • mike winslow

oh.. i asked if i could charge it while cleaning.. I guess not..

  • mike winslow

while some soaps and detergents may work differently, in the end, your camera will give the same results after this cleaning independent of soap brand

  • carlosnachos

I have follow this tutorial but my camera doesn’t seem to work anymore. What should I do ?

  • http://asklandd.dk/ Zta77

  • Matthew Neumann

    “rrrrrinse it out.” i LOL’d.

  • David Addams

There appears to be a great deal of water coming out of the lens at the 50 second mark. Far more than I would expect with an intact lens.

  • carlosnachos

I find that you get a better result using Javex or CLR.

  • RossBaquir

LOL Best thing posted on PetaPixel ever.

  • Thomas Kryton

Wouldn’t drying it in the microwave work? You might be able to cut down the drying time down to about four or five minutes that way.

  • Thomas Kryton

Agree. I think he took some of the back lens elements out to facilitate cleaning the inside of the barrel. Probably used a hammer and cold chisel.

  • jchrtra

Please promote this the more idiots that do this will thin out the herd. Lol

  • Tammy Chesney

    for sale on ebay…lmbo

  • Brian M.

FAKE!!!! Everyone knows the best way to clean your camera is tossing it in the dishwasher together with the china.

  • Kyle Clements

Congrats, you completely missed his point… He never said fracking was not a bad thing. He was pointing out that destroying high priced electronics for no other reason than for the lulz was also bad. And that, if a person laughs at those videos but rails against the fracking industry, then they are a hypocrite.

  • Cameron Prescott

The camera most likely already had water damage, and guess what even if it didn’t this guy can still do whatever he wants with things he owns. Nobody can take that away from him, if they could he wouldn’t be a free person. Do you hate freedom?

  • http://reciprocity-failure.blogspot.com/ Stan B.

Kyle- On second reading, seems you’re right, and… I’m Wrong concerning my assessment of Chang on the environment. Thank you, for pointing it out!

Chang- my Apologies. My bad- Fullstop.

I’m glad we can at least agree on the dangers posed to our environment.

  • http://biglightbox.com Andres Trujillo

    “Do you hate freedom?”

very nice reductio ad absurdum there, buddy

  • Hendrick the Elder

Give it one more rinse. Probably some of the soap is still in there. Hose it like a champ.

  • Wes Jones

Not much different than the stupid young folks lighting themselves on fire just to be a YouTube sensation… or that gal that soaks her film in urine.

  • Jason Yuen

    thank you sir

  • Grive

That’s why you take the lens off first, dude. Get past that o-ring and soak your camera real good.
