Hector Rene Membreno-Canales relied on everyday objects when he started photographing still lifes at the School of Visual Arts. Under soft lighting, he arrayed grapes, cheese and strawberries atop the folds of a tablecloth. Then, after consulting with some of his classmates, he would add an assault rifle, a gas mask or an ammunition box with dozens of bullets.
