EyeEm, the “Instagram of Europe,” has raised $6 million in venture capital in order to build out two cornerstones of its photo-sharing business: a visual search engine and a crowdsourced platform of stock photography. Unlike other competing apps on the marketplace, EyeEm hopes to focus on helping users discover and monetize.
Founder Florian Meissner states, “We don’t talk amateurs or professionals in photography. ‘Notogs’ is the term we have coined. There is a photographer inside in all of us.” The service is growing quickly: there have been 8 million downloads so far, and has been seeing 1 million new installs every month.
