Soldier Captures POV Footage of Intense Firefight with Taliban in Afghanistan

We’ve shared some pretty intense footage captured using helmet-mounted cameras in the past, but perhaps none as crazy as the video above. Shot by a US soldier in Kunar Province, Afghanistan, the video offers a point-of-view look at what it’s like to face machine gun fire from the Taliban. [Editor's note: Be warned -- there's a bit of mature language.]

The soldier writes,

I got a hit a total of 4 times. My helmet cam died and I made it down the mountain on my own. I was also hit in the side of my helmet and my eye pro was shot off of my face. We were doing overwatch on the village to recon and gather intel. I was point heading down the face of the hill with the LT. when we got hit. The rest of the squad was pinned down by machine gun fire. I didn’t start the video until a few mins into the firefight for obvious reasons. I came out into the open to draw fire so my squad could get to safety.

A round struck the tube by my hand of the 203 grenade launcher which knocked it out of my hands. When I picked the rifle back up it was still functional but the grenade launcher tube had a nice sized 7.62 cal bullet hole in it and was rendered useless.

It’s chilling to see small puffs of smoking and dust burst out of the ground around the soldier’s feet as he’s scrambling down the slope. Thankfully, his body armor protected him from the 4 bullets that actually hit him, allowing him to escape with no serious injuries and with a ridiculous video to show the world (and his grandkids).

At some point, these cameras should be standard issue for training purposes.

100% Agreed. It’s now the longest war the US has ever been involved in. It’s a blackhole of money, men, and resources, and we won’t be leaving anytime soon.

This is journalism through a camera lens, and it deserves to be here. I’m glad it was posted.

@flyinmom, I agree with everything that you have said. I respect our service men and women. A couple of my good friends are ex military and I respect them with all I have. I’m able to do what I want to do because they have sacrificed themselves so we can be comfortable. Seeing videos like this one is a sobering experience because here at home we can always run our mouths and complain we don’t have “this or that” while soldiers like him are being shot at. I can never be a person like him, I can never shoot at another human being…I can only shoot images of people willing to do what needs to be done.

Where’s the BFG when you really need it?

You shall have no respect for people trained to take someone life.

Its for the military you can not feel comfortable at home:
they do nothing for the people of the usa.

Its for this culture of fighting that the usa are becoming a World threat.

I do not fear muslims or china, im afraid that some day an american soldier
will kill me and my family!

@WEP 1-5 he does not. Calling out “I’m hit” does nothing but bring his troops down to pick him up. He is NOT taking care of his team. He is a complete moron who has put himself and his team in trouble. Idiots like that guy are not worth two bob. He’d be busted down and have his arse kicked in the Australian Army. As point he needs to engage in tactical withdrawal, cohesiveness and the best defensive position he can find.

“veteran” is just a fancy word for mentally and physically damaged poor men who live on army pension and are just a PITA for their family

“Troll” is just a description for people who come into online forums to make an ass of themselves for their own entertainment.

Is waching warfare entertaining for you ?

looking at the video at 2:19, he had a decent single point sling. I am a former Marine and have never played “war”games on a computer.

    You’re a f*cking moron jernej.

What a brave person, God Bless this soldier and his family. However, I would use it as training material on what options you might have rather then giving your own life to save others. Air strike? Relay info to those in command, seek cover before returning fire? Running into open to draw fire, while brave is not something I could do. For that I admire his love for his fellow team members, and it’s why I am not a soldier.

We need to either get out of there or remove political interference with our military and let them have full control of the military actions. This can be done by removing the head of the serpant in November.

I think they were censoring names, not swear words.

    USA are the New communists!

So many similarities to a great ideology…

I hate to be critical of ‘the man in the arena’, but your comments seem right. Exposing yourself for any reason is never a good move. He had an ACOG sight but made no attempt to make a single round count. Regardless of the aiming method used, just jerking several rounds off is bad marksmanship using any technology or doctrine. Yelling “I’m hit” without response so many times would tell you that yelling it any more would produce identical results. And he got hit because he was exposing himself while rounds are striking nearby, then got hit some more while cover was available. I respect this soldier for going in harms way, but all he contributed to the mission was a training video on what not to do. Let the flamers yell at me, but you all know I am right.

What happens when he gets incompacitated and his men have to come get him? I wasnt there but i have a feeling there was a better solution then running (actually walking) down a steep rocky hill only to get pinned down.

  • paul warren

too exposed on that open side..sniper better..

These people are killing each other and the editor is worried about “there’s a bit of mature language”..? What world are you living in..?
