Nestle Instagram Fail: Kit Kat Bear Photo Pulled After Being Likened to Pedobear

Kit Kat’s recent Instagram debut was supposed to be anything but newsworthy, just the opening up of a new marketing channel that would eventually be filled with pictures of chocolaty goodness. Unfortunately for Kit Kat owner Nestle, however, the first ever Kit Kat Instagram photo has been getting a lot of publicity, and not the good kind.

The photo simply showed a drummer in a bear costume holding a couple of Kit Kat bars, but while Nestle saw nothing wrong with it, the internet quickly drew the connection between the picture and the Internet meme Pedobear — a bear associated with pedophilia and child pornography.

Nestle has since removed the photo from its page and stated publicly that the company had no prior knowledge of Pedobear, but that hasn’t stopped the avalanche of internet mockery that inevitably followed the goof up. One thing’s for sure though, next time the folks over at Kit Kat upload a photo to Instagram you can bet they will have done their due diligence.

The first thing it reminded me of was that episode of CSI about the people who are plushophilias, the sexual fetish of wearing animal costumes for well, you know. That’s way too creepy. The Nestle’s people are surely pretty normal mainstream folks. Who on earth would think that an animal costume could be perceived so badly. I’m sure you could find a reference to almost anything if you look hard enough – there are plenty of bad santas out there. And, I didn’t know about the pedobear either, you don’t often find out about things until it hurts.
