Adobe Jumps Into the Mac App Store, Offers Lightroom 4 for $150

After dipping its toes in Apple’s Mac App Store last July by offering Photoshop Elements, Adobe has now jumped in headfirst by listing its professional-caliber program, Lightroom 4. The download costs $150 and tips the scales at 388MB. Adobe might be a giant company, but it gets charged the same commission as any other developer: for every copy sold through the App Store, Apple pockets a cool $45.

You get the same price if you buy it directly from Adobe. This isn’t an “App Store only-offer”.

    Not in Japanese app store.

I just checked. I did buy on the same day when it was announced.

And you paid a lot more than the App Store price? It’s not available in the Norwegian version of Mac App Store either, but the price from Adobe is roughly what I’d expect given a US price of $150 (App store and Adobe.com).

I’m pretty sure Adobe has some sort of agreement with Apple. Why would they bother if almost 1/3rd of the price was going to apple? that would be a dumb business move

So, Adobe could sells Lightroom for US$105 directly without loosing money.

Distribution isn’t free so selling it outside the App Store adds an extra to those $105 too. Being present in the App Store gives publicity and presence on the platform, and Apple takes care of the distribution.

Apple takes a fixed percentage of the price, and you’re not allowed to sell it cheaper outside the App Store. That’s just the way it works.

Either way… It’ll still be as flawed as the one bought through Adobes store. It so full of bugs it’s unreal and Adobe appears to have gone silent when it comes to the forums as to answering their customers complaints – I still can’t use LR4 with my external editors as to use Adobes fix is to bring other problems and bugs with it. It’s now months since LR4 was launched and there still no sign of the 4.1 update and still no sign of RAW support for the Fujifilm X-Pro1 too. Just dreadful service and support from Adobe.
