VSCO Cam Brings Professional Filters and Precision Editing to the iPhone

You may remember Visual Supply Co as the company that brought you VSCO Film, a fancy schmancy film emulation add-on for Lightroom and Camera Raw. Now, after months of waiting, the company has finally announced its newest endeavor: the VSCO Cam iPhone camera app.

When the app went live a couple of days ago it shot straight to number one among paid camera apps (making it all the way to number eight overall), and we can see why. VSCO Cam comes loaded with 10 professional-quality filters and a slew of control options that we’re just not used to seeing on the iPhone.

At 99 cents you get the feeling that this app is a real steal. You can alter any photo’s exposure, contrast, fill, color temperature, and saturation — you can even add grain. The 10 filters that come with the app will do the work for you, but you’ll have more fun if you start messing with the features yourself. And once you’re done editing you can share your photos in-app through all of the social media outlets we love best: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and email.

The only real complaint that has come up is that the interface is a bit convoluted, but a few minutes exploring the options will solve that problem once and for all.

VSCO Cam is definitely worth a look, and not because it’s “professional” — it’s hard for an app to reach that designation because any app is necessarily limited by the hardware it’s bound to — but because the editing ability gets it close, and more importantly, it’s fun!
