Thieves Stealing Camera Lenses from Around Photographers’ Necks

The next time you’re walking around with a DSLR around your neck and a stranger asks you for directions, you might want to keep a hand on your lens. Yesterday BBC’s “The Real Hustle” included a short segment in which they demonstrated how easy it is to steal a lens on the street. The con artists simply detach and pocket the camera lens of an unsuspecting photographer while pretending to ask for directions. Apparently this is a real con that thieves are using these days…

    That’s the quiet/low-profile way.

I was traveling in 2006 when someone came up beside me in a crowd, cut the camera strap (that was around my neck) with scissors and tried to run. Caught him, but I always keep my hands firmly planted on my camera+lens in certain areas.

Here, we have camera hold-up gangs that pose as potential clients of professional photographers but then robbing them of their cameras and other equipment.

I’d definitely feel the weight difference if a lens were removed from the body; and if you are that close to anyone, I’d have my hand resting on camera…

I tried removing my lens the way he does it, it’s not easy, the lens is stiff to remove too, People are just to oblivious.
