Samsung Unveils the NX200: 20MP APS-C Sensor in a “Retro Modern” Body

Samsung has announced its new mirrorless NX200, a year after introducing the NX100. The flat and smooth body has been replaced with a more ergonomic design, which the company reportedly describes as “retro modern”. Inside, you’ll find a powerful 20.3 megapixel APS-C sensor, which shoots 7fps in burst mode, records 1080p30 HD video, and boasts an ISO range of 100-12800. There’s no viewfinder, but on the back you’ll find a large 3-inch display.

The Samsung NX200 will ship in late September with a price tag of $900.

Having used a number of Samsung cameras including the GX10 and 20 it will be interesting to view the picture IQ and see if they have sorted their over complex menu systems out.

Nice as it looks, I can’t help thinking it looks quite a lot like my Sony Nex-5.

Holy crap–couple that with the 30mm f/2 (EX-S30NB) and you’ve got an awesome street photography camera to rival the Fuji X100.

No, wait. This has no hybrid viewfinder. Nor a manual viewfinder. Meh.

Sounds interesting but I don’t get what’s so retro about it.

I think it’s because it has faux leather grips… You know it’s retro when it has them.

The only reason why people buy a DSLR is the professional feel of it’s bulkiness. I even added a battery grip to my Nikon D7000 for better grip esp when using a long lens. This Samsung camera will surely hurt the users hand for countering the weight of the lens with a very light body esp when using a long lens. Samsung definitely overlooked this detail. And after a long time use and countering the with of the lens, your hands will get tired and cause it to shake big time and ruin your shots. Samsung should come up with a pocketable full size tripod.

Samsung really dropped the ball with this one. I can understand the nx200 not having a built in evf ..but no accessory smart shoe for an add on evf? That is like what panasonic did with the gf2 when they took out the mystical mode dial. sometimes, following the crowd is not a good thing. They should have stuck to a core philosophy and kept their cameras a particular size. Now i see theyre following the sony trend of making a camera to eventually being as small as a pack of matches. For this camera to have any decent sales it better not be over 600 usd. it’s so sad to see that Samsung is making nice primes to go with that camera..only to have users use the lcd for shooting instead of a proper evf. Samsung should have stuck with one camera line and combined the traits of their nx10 and nx100.Why would anyone buy this camera when the nx20 is set to come out with a built in evf? and if that is the only primary difference, then what was the point of even making this nx200? I own a nx100 and nx10 and there’s no question about it, using the nx100 back lcd to shoot pics when bright sun is behind your camera is a b%$#th. So now im stuck with the problem of whether to keep investing in Samsung or go with sony, which imo is too expensive and over rated. The m4/3 dont appeal to me because of the smaller sensors. Camera makers dont seem to make cameras for ppl who like photography anymore these days…esp the csc market. They just seem to care only about shrinking the cameras down to the size of a lens rear cap.

And because of cameras like the sony nex so may many cameras are beginning to resemble the size small chocolate bar.

Really reminds me of Sony NEX – this samsung also has NX in its name:) I wouldn’t worry about the lack of viewfinder, but this camera misses the tilting screen which makes Sony NEX so useful. I don’t own one, but having played with a few of these got to like its compactness. I’ll let the technology mature into something more ergonomic and useful.
