The President of Russia and His Leica S2

Dimitri Medvedev, the president of Russia, is a big photography enthusiast and a fan of Leica cameras, though from the video above — in which Medvedev uses a $20,000+ Leica S2 medium format DSLR — it seems someone needs to give him a few pointers on holding and using the camera.

Earlier this year we shared a video in which Medvedev talks in-depth about his involvement in photography. You can find some of Medvedev’s work here.

    Such a beautiful camera. :)

I cringed at his portrait grip! And the fact that he wasn’t using the neck strap wasn’t exactly helping!

I wish I could say his photos are good. But they are really not. Of course, this is a special case; after all, how many presidents can you cite that shows off his own photos? It’s just a shame that they are nothing special. Looks like normal tourists photos to me.

i love how a sneaky 1d canon with L lens pops in to snap him, pew pew!

(from the page that shows some of his work): “Dmitry Medvedev – master of contemporary photoart”

Ultimately, what one judges is not the name of a photographer, not how they hold the camera, not where they have access to shoot, or what they are shooting with. It is the resulting photograph/image that is judged.

The images presented on that page looked fine, in and of themselves. Not great examples of composition, use of color, etc. Some are busy, others include shadows that look unintentionally caught in the image, still others, as others have pointed out, look like normal tourist and safari photos.

Would be interesting to see how his photography changes over time. But the prices his works have sold for, I believe the name added more value than the camera.

Ladders can be helpful at times to change perspective. ^_-

Hi) I am from Russia. There are really funny comments about president and his camera on this page) I like them!))

Haha, brilliant! Me and my friend jokes a lot about the russian-english accent and I couldn’t make out what you wrote until I said it out loud in russian-english.

  • Travis

I have this feeling like I have a better chance of becoming a russian president and getting an S2 for free long before I have a chance of working 40 hours/week and affording one on my own….

What a joke! Master?! No offense, but I feel an advanced point and shoot would suit his style much better than this High Resolution Rig designed for Art, Fashion and Fine Prints.

Thai King Bhumibol (Rama 9), great photographer (see :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-EnK5ZUH_8Q for example). Of course, he know how to hold it right! ;-)
