Gorilla Films Itself with a GoPro Camera

How do you get a silverback gorilla to put a GoPro HD camera up to its face? Stuff the case full of raisins, of course!

This cheeky ape turned photographer for a day after being handed a high-definition camera by his keepers. Silverback gorilla Ya Kwanza, 27, happily snapped away at himself and his surroundings in his compound in Durrell Wildlife Park in Jersey. The gorilla even took a number of close-up shots before returning the camera to his keepers by throwing it over the wall of his enclosure. Staff at the park also captured the gorilla photographing himself with the indestructible camera, which was covered in honey and oats. [#]

Lesson learned: if you ever lose your camera to a silverback gorilla, ask nicely and they’ll throw it back.

Thanks for the tip, Joe!

Interesting concept. I’ll bet you could also get interesting videos by coating a camera with food and handing it to kids. For adults, you might need to coat the camera with other things people want: money, fashion accessories, techno-gadgets… come to think of it, I guess that’s what the Apple-Store-webcam guy did, and it did produce pictures, although it also got him into trouble…

The best part was when the gorilla threw back the case.

I don’t see the gorilla doing anything with the camera… He’s just interested in the food. “Snapped away at himself”, yeah right :(

I like this gorilla, but he hates me! I’m at the Durrell’s twice a year (I love this place soo much), but the gorilla hates me – he is huge, like 300kgs I think, once he saw me behind my camera (btw I don’t use flash) and he tried to attack me, but luckily the doors where heavy-duty and he bounced off.
Chimpanzee are much more fun! They should them give a camera too.
BTW Durrell Wildlife Park is based in Jersey, I mean the real Jersey, on English Channel :)

Does the Gorilla own the rights to the footage or the zookeepers?

I grew up in Jersey and these gorillas are amazing. The former “head honcho silverback” Jambo made world news in the mid 1990s when a little boy fell into the gorilla enclosure. Jambo sat beside the unconscious boy caressing his cheek and keeping all the other gorillas away from him until medics were able to get to him. Headlines around the world called Jambo “The Gentle Giant”.

I highly recommend a visit to not just Durrell Wildlife Park but Jersey as a whole. Amazing history and many, many awesome photographic opportunities.
