Monkey Hijacks Photographer’s Camera and Shoots Self-Portraits

Three years ago wildlife photographer David Slater spent three days photographing a group of crested black macaque monkeys in an Indonesian national park. As he was trying to fend off some monkeys, another monkey approached his tripod-mounted Canon 5D and started playing with the remote shutter release.

They were quite mischievous, jumping all over my equipment. One hit the button. The sound got his attention and he kept pressing it. At first it scared the rest of them away but they soon came back – it was amazing to watch. [#]

Afterward, he found hundreds of photos taken by the monkeys on his memory card, including some self-portraits and even a portrait of Slater.

Here’s an interesting question: doesn’t the monkey technically own the rights to the images?

The only reason that there’s a difference is that humans are the ones writing the rules, an irrelevancy that far too many people foolishly assume has some moral value at its root.

Nice composition, lighting and exposure but too close to the camera. Got the ‘dog nose’ thing happening.

I had my snappy camera snatched from my hands by a chimpanzee while visiting the Chimpanzee sanctuary on N’gamba Island on Lake Victoria in Uganda. After watching my camera being prodded and smashed for over an hour, the ranger managed to eventually get it back from her in exchange for a banana.
The result was this one picture.

If a lawyer decided to represent the Ape, then the financial benefit to the monkey would be peanuts .

Are you sure these aren’t pictures from the digital camera department at Best Buy?

Have to laugh Sarah. Yup, First they were funny then they creeped me out . Now they kind of do a little of both at the same time.

This just in:  Petapixel hijacks guardian.co.uk content and then starts making an aside about rights management.

This is ridiculous.  If you cared *at all* about digital photography, you’d be more judicial about your theft of digital content on the web.   Posting a “Via Guardian.co.uk” backlink doesn’t make it better, especially when you’re selling your own ad space here.  where are your frigging ethics?  Freeloaders.

    The man took it!
You can see his arm when you zoom in the monkey’s pupil.
    Its a hoax!

  • Aysha

You can see the arm holding the lens – its a pale colour – not dark like a monkey’s arm.

am I the only one to call BS on this whole story?  Shots are way too well composed, have no motion blur and are perfectly focussed.

I call BS on this until we have a shot of the monkey actually taking the photo, holding a DSLR perfectly still, focussing and framing his photo.

I beg to differ. I think it was the monkey’s camera and this guy stole it from the monkey. I mean have a look at the pics. The 1st and 3rd pics is the monkey doing his facebook profile shots. The second one, the monkey was just doing some papparazi shot on the guy and the guy got offended and tried to grab the camera off him.

  • Adgjet

wonder if the monkeys posted them to their Facebook!

  • ThrobbinManMeat

seriously though photography is overrated there is an art aspect to it but they are given way too much credit for being really good when its just a couple rules to it it doesn’t take a super human mind to take a good picture for the most part

  • Cmfbear16

    bam!

  • Dido

ThrobbinManMeat… sounds like you’re jealous that even a monkey can take a better picture than you. LOL

  • uh huh

Wouldn’t bet on that my friend… Have you seen the ambulance chasers in down town NY. I reckon they’d give it a shot no win no fee even…   :)
