NASA Hasselblad Up for Sale on eBay

NASA Hasselblad Up for Sale on eBay hassy1

Forget the uber-rare Leica MP2 that’s going on auction at the end of this year. If you want a unique camera but don’t want to trade your house for it, you can save yourself a couple hundred grand by going for this brand new made-for-NASA Hasselblad MKWE up for sale on eBay for a cool $33,751.

We’re not sure why the price is so specific or what exactly makes this a NASA camera (it doesn’t seem to be branded so), but it’s a definitely an eye-catching Hassy.

Looks like it’s just modified to prevent static electricity from building up when winding / advancing film. And the magazine shoots 70mm long rolls, so unless NASA is releasing that film, you would have to use another hassy back.

but looks like it comes with a digital back though

Here’s how a Flickr friend (arato) describes this Hasselblad:

“The MKWE (Metric Kamera, Wide angle, Electronic winder) was designed for land survey purposes, and basically a motorized SWC (SWC/M) with dedicated 70 film back with custom reseau plate to project that hairline cross targets on film.”

Just to be clear: not a digital hassy.

This looks like a Hasselblad 555 ElE version of 903 SWC. This has a motor drive film advance and has a fixed 38mm f 4.5 wide angle lens, which is very good lens. Medium format digital backs like those from Leaf Aptus can be used with this camera in landscape mode.
